Stony Point vs Bowie Scrimmage

While Brad's first time on the Stony Point field was playing with Varsity, he still remains a member of the JV Team. Friday, the JV team had their first game vs. Bowie.

It was a super cold and windy day. I think the temp was about 47 as we sat and watched the game with blankets wrapped around us.

Unfortunately, Stony Point didn't come away with a win. Brad's team lost 1-3 against the Bowie JV team. They had it tied up in early in the 2nd half. But an off sides (not called) goal and a deflection in to our goal helped Bowie secure the win.

Brad had some solid saves despite the loss. I'm looking forward to seeing his high school team play this season!

High School Soccer Debut

While Brad has been practicing with his high school soccer team for the most part of this school year (thanks to his soccer class) the pre-season games have just started.

On Wednesday, Brad was planning on attending the Varsity vs. Alumni game to show support. Half way through the day I got a call from the Varsity head coach asking if Brad could suit up for the Alumni game. Apparently one of the Varsity keepers didn't make grades and they want Brad to fill in for him for the Alumni Game and two upcoming tournaments.

Brad was pumped...and a little nervous. I was terrified! He's not just a Freshman...he's a young Freshman playing against college (or older) age men. But, I thought to myself, what are the chances that he'll get any playing time. I mean they still had their other keeper. They'd probably just use Brad in emergency situations.

Well he got playing time. He played 20 minutes in the 2nd half.  When he got up from the bench, I turned to Rob and asked him "What is he doing?" Rob calmly replied that he's getting warmed up to go in the game. I wasn't as calm. Even when Brad ran on to the field and took his position in the box.

Brad held his own against the alumni and only conceded one goal in the last 30 seconds of the game. Proud of that boy!

Game Highlights: Game vs. KSA14 2002

September 10th the boys played KSA14 2002. This was our first season game of the Fall. We ended up losing the actual game. However, later we found out that the team was DQ'd due to an ineligible player playing for them during the game. So our team defaulted to a win.

Brad's Stats:

  • Saves: 5
  • Goal Kicks: 6
  • Punts: 11
  • Throws: 2
  • Goals Against: 1

Austin Labor Day Tournament 2016

September 3rd & 4th Brad's Lonestar Team played in the Austin Labor Day Tournament

The first game against FC Dallas 02B Blue ended in a 2-2 draw. After the first game, the team had a group lunch at Mellow Mushroom.

  • Saves: 9
  • Goal Kicks: 6

The second game vs. Albion Hurricane 02B B ended in a 5-0 loss.

  • Saves 11
  • Goal Kicks 6

The third game on September 4th against another Albion Hurricane team ended in a 9-0 loss. Unfortunately, Brad got kicked in the face in the 1st half and we had to take him to Urgent Care. It was unfortunate that not only their players & coach displayed unsportsmanlike conduct but the parents talked trash about Brad getting kicked in the face and made disrespectful comments. It is really a reflection on the Albion Hurricane soccer organization when their coach leads by example by encouraging his players to injure smaller players and not hold his team accountable for their actions. After we got home from Urgent Care, I was still super upset. Not so much that B got injured. That can happen in a game. But that the Albion Hurricane player intentionally did it and his coach encouraged it. After checking out their "mission" - I had a laugh. Because it's obvious they don't coach to it, hold their players to the expectations, or their parents.

A fun part of the weekend is because there were so many teams from all over Texas playing in this tournament, we were able to see some of our friends from our Europe trip!

Day 6: Irish Freedom & The Dublin Cup (7/29/2016)

Our first full day in Dublin, Ireland started off immersed in the history of Ireland's independence. Our tour director, John Higgins, was absolutely fantastic in sharing the rich history of the areas we have visited. We had a really true treat in our coach driver, Mike, though. He was able to give us a bit more history and share the actual route those who fought for Ireland's freedom took when they retreated from the General Post Office.

Our first stop was the Garden of Remembrance in Dublin. The gardens are located on the Northern end of O'Connell street and is dedicated to those who lost their lives in the cause of Irish freedom. The site of the garden is where the Irish Volunteers were founded in 1913. It is also where several leaders of the 1916 were held before taken to Kilmainham Goal. The garden is a very somber site. The garden includes a sunken cross-shaped water feature which has a tiled bottom that appears to have golden shields and weapons at the bottom. This symbolizes a Celtic custom which is upon the conclusion of battle the weapons were broken and thrown in to the river. This action is to symbolize the end of hostilities. Above the sunken water feature is a beautiful statue of The Children of Lir, an Irish legend, which symbolizes rebirth and resurrection.

The harp, which was symbolized in so many places, was everywhere within Dublin.
"We Saw a Vision" by Mac Uistin
The photo is the poem "We Saw a Vision" which was written on the walls of the garden by an Irish author, Mac Uistin. It reads:

"In the darkness of despair we saw a vision,
We lit the light of hope and it was not extinguished.
In the desert of of discouragement we saw a vision.
We planted the tree of valor and it blossomed.
In the winter of bondage we saw a vision.
We melted the snow of lethargy and the river of resurrection flowed from it.
We sent our vision aswim like a swan on the river. The vision became a reality.
Winter became summer. Bondage became freedom and this we left to you as your inheritance.
O generations of freedom remember us, the generations of the vision."

After the garden we headed over to see the route that the rebels took in retreating from the General Post Office (GPO) in 1916.

The route is lined by tiles of lilies. These can be found on the walls of buildings.
Along the route is a plaque with a copy of a letter written by a dying revolutionary to his wife. The O'Rahilly took the letter from his son out of his pocket and wrote a letter to his wife on the back in pencil.

The letter reads...

Written after I was shot - Darling Nancy, I was shot leading a rush up Moore Street took refuge in a doorway. While I was there I heard the men pointing out where I was & I made a bolt for the lane I am in now. I got more [than] one bullet I think
Tons and tons of love dearie to you & to the boys & to Nell & Anna. It was a good fight anyhow.
Please deliver this to Nannie O'Rahilly, 40 Herbert Park, Dublin.
Good bye Darling.

Prior to all of this fighting the Irish Proclamation was read on the steps of the General Post Office on Easter Sunday on April 24th, 1916. The Proclamation is the only declaration of independence where a country calls out equality for men and women.

We took a walk over the O'Connell bridge on our way to the coach to head over to the first match of the Dublin Cup.

Before hopping on the coach, we took a quick walk over to statue of Molly Malone.

GAME TIME!

Around lunch time we headed over to the AUL Complex for the team's first match in the Dublin Cup.

The pitch (field) was beautiful - especially compared to some of the fields we have played on in Texas!

The first match we played an Irish team named Palmerstown FC. It was an exciting game. The boys started off really strong. Unfortunately, about a third of the way through the first half one of our boys was fouled after the ref stopped play. A player from Palmerstown pushed and kicked one of our players after he fell down. The boy was red carded and sent off the pitch. Our boys never really got their fire back after the drama. Because we had multiple keepers, Brad started and played the first half. He had a strong game and made some great saves. We ended up in a 0-0 draw against Palmerstown when all was said and done.

Summer Craziness

Well...there went June!

Brad's really enjoyed the down time of summer. Mostly the no school part!

In early June, the team he will be traveling with to England & Ireland had their first practice & get together.

Unfortunately, it resulted in a trip to Urgent Care after the 2nd day. By the end of the day, Brad was having a hard time walking. His heel had started really hurting and he couldn't walk without limping substantially.

NOT a happy camper

Unfortunately, he had to wear a boot for about a week and a half. Fortunately, of all the diagnosis it could have been, it was something easily treatable with some PT and lots of ongoing stretching.

Learning how to properly stretch at PT

With the green light from the doctor and physical therapist, Brad was eager to get back to training and working out at MAD Training. He attended the 2nd training session for his Ireland trip and luckily had minimal pain. He's gotten good at the stretching and listening to his body if he starts to feel any sort of pain.

Before the boot came off, he was still finding ways to stay fit!

We have about 3-4 weeks until we head out on our trip. Crazy how time flies!

Remember me?

Probably not.

I've been MIA for a while.

My dear friend Jaymie reminded me that I haven't updated my blog since August. Work has just been kicking my butt. My work office shares my "fun" office upstairs. So literally, I just don't want to be up here because it makes me think of the stress of work. I haven't blogged, haven't crafted, haven't taken many photos since August.

Pity Party of 1!

So here's a run down of what Team Wadas has been up to over the last few months...

SOCCER - Literally, 6-7 days of our week is filled with soccer. Brad has Goal Keeper (GK) training Mondays. Team training on Tues/Thurs. Conditioning training either Wednesday or Friday. Games are 1-2 times a weekend. Rob has also been playing soccer. He plays in 3 different leagues! Below are some photos taken during the Labor Day Tournament

Our team got 2nd place!

WORK: Work's just been super busy. Enough said.

A BIT OF FUN: A few weekends ago we went to the UT Game. It had record attendance. It was quite fun. Here are  few photos from the game.

So that, my friends, is about it! Exciting stuff, right?

Scrimmage (8/25/12)

B had his first game on Saturday morning. Well, it was actually more of a scrimmage with another Lonestar team. They were a "higher" team than us,so we were not sure what to expect.

Our team did really well. We were very proud of our guys. They played smart and won! I believe the final score was 8-0. That's right...B didn't let the team score ONE time!!

2012-2013 Soccer Season

Soccer season has begun!

At the beginning of the summer we paid a pretty price for his uniform kits. Brad was super excited to get them. He has the choice of a white, black,or purple goal keeper jersey. Brad (being the lover of any bright color) chose purple.

Las week we had "camp" which was 3 days of training in the morning.it gave the new team the opportunity to play and get to know each other a bit. Brad seems to like his team {yay}.

Brad's number is 29 this year. Look out central TX soccer for number 29!!!!
