Organizing Decoratively: Inexpensive Magazine Holders

I think I have my mom to thank for my magazine/catalog addiction. Some of the issues are hard to throw in the recycle bin. Some provide great gift giving ideas, others give me so much inspiration for cooking or crafts or decor. My top 4 are: Real Simple, Coastal Living, Country Living & the Ballard Designs Catalog. My husband has been quietly putting up with seeing both new and old magazine and catalogs lying around the house. I was in search of a way to KEEP these to refer back to...but also unclutter the house and get them out of my hubby's hair (or lack there of)!

Brad (my son) & I took a trip to Ikea. It's literally right down the street from us - which I love. They have some great organization tools and ideas!

Here's a list of things you will need:
  • FLYT (5 pack of magazine holders from Ikea)
  • Mod Podge (or other matte medium)
  • sharp scissors
  • pencil
  • sanding block (or paper)
Here's what I did:

I picked up a 5 pack of magazine holders (Ikea Language: FLYT) for $1.99. They come unassembled and shrink-wrapped in a package of 5. They're super easy to assemble - just a few folds and you're done!

I found some really pretty paper by The Paper Studio called "Traditions Floral Paisley" at Hobby Lobby (I think) several months ago. I got two (2) 12x12 size peices. Each normally $0.59 each...but I got them on sale for 50% off! You will need 2 peices if you plan to cover the front of all 5 magazine holders.

Next you will trace the outside with the long side with the hole facing down (or if you are planning on displaying the short side facing out, trace the short side). Trace along the edges and inside the hole. Cut out what you traced.

Next take your mod podge (I used matte finish) to adhere your paper to the magazine holder. Once it's dry put a few more layers on top of the paper. After I did this I sanded the edges a tiny bit and along the top of the magazine holder (the edges are a little rough - but after a little sanding they're smooth and nice).
Once you're done, add them to any book case or shelf! An easy (and inexpensive way) to organize, declutter and decorate a room! I'm looking forward to making a few of these for my son's room once we find the bookcase we've been searching for. What a fun way to add a pop of color to a room while keeping it tidy.

You can even use clothespins to attach a tag or label to it if you don't want to permanently stick a label to the front. (I used a smaller clothespin than what I have listed in my etsy shop. I plan on adding some small decorated clothespins to the shop a little later this month)
